(3) Operation
1. Connect the connector to the unit on the instrument to be tested under light source (for
example, O.T.D.R.)
2. First, scrub the end of HU125 for alignment repeatedly with a cleaning brush moistened
by alcohol in the direction indicated by the arrow above the slot. Then clean the slot
and the fiber input port with an air cleaner several times, and drop a little matching oil.
3. After cleaning the bare fiber with alcohol, cut the fiber by following the standard cutting
process (or cut it with the scissors or just break it by your hand. * Note 1). The
length of the bare fiber is about 12 mm as shown in the following drawing. Then insert
the fiber into the fiber input port of HU125 lightly and entirely for test.
* Note 1: If the optical fiber is cut by the scissors or by hand, then only the matching oil with
an index of refraction (ND) ?1.4500 +/- 0.01 can be used as a medium. Alcohol or pure
water containing at least 30% alcohol is not suitable for such cutting method.
(4) Maintenance (** Note: Do not use acetone in any case.)
If the fiber becomes opaque, please take the following steps:
1. Draw out the bare fiber in the alignment end of the HU125, and then repeat the steps
described in (3)-2 until the fiber becomes transmittal.
2. If HU125 is used in an adverse circumstance (such as the outdoor work site for
installation of optical fiber), then the inner part of the HU125 will be stained with some
gelatinous impurities and thus lead to opaque. At this moment, it is suggested to clean the HU125 in an ultrasonic cleaner for about 5 minutes as shown in the following drawing. (Alcohol can be used in the ultrasonic cleaner as cleaning agent.) After that, repeat the cleaning steps of (3)-2.
3. Should the bare fiber break, there will be two methods for troubleshooting:
a. If the bare fiber breaks at the position as indicated in Fig. (a), the cleaning wire can
be used to remove the broken fiber completely in a manner shown in Fig. (b) and
(c).
b. If the bare fiber breaks at the position as indicated in Fig. (d), then a needle can be
put in the center of the slot as shown in Fig. (e) at the edge of the bare fiber. Press
the needle gently to squeeze the bare fiber out easily. At this time, break the fiber
and then eliminate the residual fiber in the slot in the way indicated in Fig (f).
4. Fabrication of Cleaning Wire
Properly heat the cotton stick at the central position and then stretch it to be a tubular shape as shown in the following drawing. Cut it into two pieces and put them into the steel threads respectively. Then fix them to the threads with super glue.
